Asian Millenarianism (by Dr. Hong beom Rhee)
Preface (영한대역)
Although many people have different views of the world, it is accepted knowledge that morning follows night and that spring comes after winter. Scientists contend that the universe operates on a cyclical model, where a new star is born and an old star dies in a manner like that of humanity, where the birth of a baby takes place alongside the death of an older person.

One may say that birth and death are not really separate, but form components of a cycle like day and night. What is it, however, that gives this process its momentum? Are such events the manifestations of Natural Law, cosmic cycles, or the will of God? Furthermore, can we take it for granted that such cycles are destined to go on forever? For some time now, prominent religious leaders, philosophers, scholars, scientists, and politicians including former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, and many ordinary people, have believed that we are entering, or indeed may already be in, the last days of the world—the time of Armageddon described in the Bible. Such beliefs have influenced global human affairs, with shifts in U.S.-Russian relations and the frequent crises in the Middle East providing particular examples of how this belief guides the thinking of those involved.

As we enter the 21st century, and the third millennium era, humankind is experiencing a rise in the number of natural disasters and epidemic diseases that it must combat, together with an increased proliferation of mass destruction weapons and a growing threat of nuclear war. The considerable commercial success of the 2004 film, “The Day after Tomorrow,” which portrayed the chaos that the onset of a new Ice Age would bring with it, may be an indication of peoples’ anxieties over the fragility of life on earth and the fear that we are indeed approaching the end of a phase in history. Such thoughts bring with them a host of questions. Are these apocalyptic phenomena temporary or not? Are we really living in the lastdays? Will a paradise replace this world after a cataclysm of destruction? If so, when and how? Furthermore, do these thoughts differ depending on our cultural background?
Do Eastern peoples regard this change in the same way as those in the West? These are questions that cannot fail to fuel debate. The subject of the millenarian dream is almost a universal concern for humanity.

Although they are guided by their own beliefs, many are striving to see the fulfillment of some form of the millenarian dream, and history gives us many examples of how people have set about trying to turn such dreams into reality.
Although it has come to take on environmental, and even political aspects, the millenarian idea began mainly as a religious and philosophical belief. It has since become an integral part of many cultures, taking on a host of different forms. The religious thought of Judaism has influenced Semitic people; Christianity has influenced Western culture; Islam, the people from the Nile to the Oxus1 and other Islamic nations; and the I-jing (Book of Changes)2, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism have influenced Asians. Today science, which can be seen as a new millenarian religion, greatly influences the way that our global society thinks about itself and the world around it. In all of its forms, then, it may be argued that one can hardly understand human history without understanding the concept of millenarianism and the human desire to see it enacted or encouraged. A key difference between East and West, however, is the perceived means by which the millenarian dream is to be brought to fruition.
History is the story of all human affairs, which includes millenarian, political, and social agendas, all of which have had worldwide repercussions. Given the complex relationship between past, present, and future, it may legitimately be argued that the study of history is one of the most important enterprises that humans may undertake.
The purpose of studying history is not simply to reconstruct the past but also (a) to find truth in the world, (b) to acquire human wisdom, (c) to contribute to the development of civilization, and (d) to achieve, or at the least to endeavor to understand, the millenarian dream. With understanding gained through careful historical study, humankind may move toward achieving the millenarian dream.
Human curiosity about the course of the future and the nature of truth has contributed greatly to the development of civilization. There have always been and still are many mysteries in the world. Many people have made these mysteries part of their own religious faith and ideology. As a result, there have been several religious and millenarian wars. Many ambitious kings, politicians, scholars, businessmen, and ordinary people have believed in supernatural powers and have followed the advice of the mystics or spiritual psychics.
Some of the more famous historical examples include Napoleon Bonaparte, who changed his name to become a hero after listening to a fortune-teller. We know that Julius Caesar’s wife claimed to experience a strange dream before Caesar was killed in Rome. There have also been
successful predictions of the rise and fall of many dynasties. Stories still persist that there is a curse on the U.S.presidency—all presidents, except for George W. Bush, elected in years ending in “0” have died or were shot
while in office. In this century, Jeanne Dixon (1918–1997) successfully predicted the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the death of President Roosevelt, and the fall of Soviet Prime Minister Malenkov from power. Due to Dixon’s famous predictive powers, many ambitious people, including foreign diplomats were said to have preferred meeting her to meeting famous political figures.
People often do not really comprehend why major historical events occur, and the popularity of belief in the supernatural as a shaping force in history is connected to a general willingness to believe in millenarianism as an ‘end’ to the historical process.
