When we think of the capital city of Japan, we think of Tokyo, but it’s a little known fact that the quaint city of Nara was Japan’s original capital city. Until December 31st, Nara will be celebrating its 1300th anniversary as the previous capital of Japan.
History 역사
Nara is located in the north of the Nara Basin, where the Japanese empire was born in prehistoric times. The city’s construction was guided by the Baekje, one of the three kingdoms located in the Korean peninsula, who brought Chinese influence and technology to Japan. In fact, most of the city’s notable monuments (the Great Buddha, Horyuji, etc) were built by Baekje architects and some say that the city’s name derives from the Baekje word for “nation” (narat or nara).
During the Nara Period, Japanese society was agricultural in nature and centered around villages. Most of the villagers followed Shinto, a religion based on the worship of natural and ancestral spirits. The royal court of Empress Gemmei created a new capital modeled after the capital of Tang China, Chang’an, in 710 AD and Nara remained the capital of Japan until 784 AD. During the eighth century, high civilization of the Middle Kingdom was inserted into Nara after the fall of Baekje and the arrival of a substantial influx of Koreans people. During this time, Buddhism was developed under royal patronage. Although the capital transferred to Kyoto in 784, Buddhist temples prevailed and enjoyed widespread support.
