2021년 12월 17일, Patrol Squadron (VP) 1에 배속된 P-8A 포세이돈 해상초계기가 초계작전을 수행하던 중 오로라를 목격했다. VP-1은 현재 미 6함대 작전 지역에 전진 배치되어 있으며 유럽과 아프리카 전역에 배치된 해상 초계 및 정찰 비행대의 전술적 통제를 담당하는 TF 67의 사령관이 맡고 있다. 이탈리아 나폴리에 본부를 둔 미 6함대는 유럽과 아프리카의 미국의 국가 안보 이익과 안정을 증진시키기 위해 종종 동맹 및 기관간 파트너들과 협력하여 모든 범위의 합동작전을 수행한다.
A P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft assigned to witnesses the Northern Lights while conducting routine flight operations, Dec. 17, 2021. VP-1 is currently forward-deployed to the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations and is assigned to Commander, Task Force 67, responsible for tactical control of deployed maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadrons throughout Europe and Africa. U.S. Sixth Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts a full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national security interests and stability in Europe and Africa.
