<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/U6H08dEASLQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> 두 개의 태양을 가진 행성이 발견됐다. 두개의 태양 시스템은 영화 스타워즈의 주인공 루크 스카이워커의 고향 행성 타투인이 가진 것으로 묘사돼 큰 흥미를 끈 바 있다. 12일 미국 사이언스데일리 등은 미국의 과학자들이 나사(NASA·미항공우주국) 케플러 우주망원경을 이용해 백조자리에서 각각 두 개의 태양을 돌고 있는 토성 크기의 가스행성 케플러-34b와 케플러-35b를 발견했다고 네이처지를 인용해 보도했다. 이번에 발견된 별은 지구로부터 약 4900광년 떨어진 지점에 있는 케플러 34-b와 5400광년 떨어진 케플러 35-b이다. 전자의 경우 28일 주기로 공전하는 두 별을 289일 주기로 돌고 있고, 후자는 21일 주기로 공전하는 두 별을 131일 주기로 돌고 있다. 지금까지 발견된 두개의 태양을 가진 행성은 현재까지 3개다. 지난해 9월에는 지구로부터 200광년 거리에서 두 개의 태양 주변을 도는 행성 케플러-16b가 발견된 적이 있다. 연구진은 이른바 '쌍성(雙星) 주위 행성(circumbinary planet)'으로 불리는 이런 유형의 행성이 "우리 은하에만도 수백만개나 될 가능성이 있다"고 밝혔다. 이런 행성은 태양이 두 개나 되기 때문에 한 개의 태양을 가진 지구와 달리 기후의 변화가 매우 클 것으로 추정된다. 연구진은 "이런 행성에서는 1년에 4계절이 몇 번씩이나 찾아오며 온도 변화도 극심할 것"이라고 말했다. 연구진은 "이런 행성이 벌써 세 개나 발견됨으로써 우리는 이미 특수한 '골디락스' 영역에 근접하고 있다"고 주장했다. 골디락스 영역은 행성이 중심별로부터 너무 가깝거나 너무 멀지 않아 생명체가 존재할 수 있는 환경을 가리킨다. 우리 은하 안에 있는 태양과 같은 유형의 별들은 대부분 가까운 거리에서 서로 공전하는 '짝 별'과 함께 발견되고 있는데, 연구진은 이런 쌍성계의 1% 정도는 주위를 도는 행성을 갖고 있을 것으로 생각되는 만큼 쌍성 주변 행성들이 은하 내에 수백만개는 될 것이라고 추측했다 NASA Discovers New Double-Star Planet Systems While long anticipated in both science and science fiction, the existence of a circumbinary planet -- a planet orbiting two stars -- like "Tatooine" portrayed in the film Star Wars more than 30 years ago, was not definitively established until the discovery of Kepler-16b, announced in September 2011. Today, using data from NASA's Kepler mission, astronomers announced the discovery of two new double-star planet systems -- Kepler-34 and Kepler-35 -- at the 219th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas, Jan. 8-12, 2012. "This work further establishes that such 'two sun' planets are not rare exceptions, but may in fact be common, with many millions existing in our galaxy," said William Welsh of San Diego State University and Kepler participating scientist who led the study. "This discovery broadens the hunting ground for systems that could support life." The Kepler space telescope detects planets and planet candidates by measuring dips in the brightness of more than 150,000 stars to search for planets crossing in front, or transiting, their stars. The Kepler science team requires at least three transits to verify a signal as a planet. The two new planets, named Kepler-34b and Kepler-35b, are both gaseous Saturn-size planets. Kepler-34b orbits its two sun-like stars every 289 days, and the stars orbit one another every 28 days. Kepler-35b orbits its smaller and cooler host stars every 131 days, and the stellar pair orbit each other every 21 days. The planets reside too close to their parent stars to be in the "habitable zone"- the region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. At 4,900 and 5,400 light-years from Earth, located in the constellation Cygnus, Kepler-34b and Kepler-35b are among the most distant planets discovered. The findings are described in a new study published Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 in the journal Nature. NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., manages Kepler's ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis.
