이 프로그램의 일원으로서, 여기 다시 서게 된 것에 대단한 기쁨을 느낍니다.
또한, 행사를 원활하게 진행해 주고 있는 프레드, 애드리안을 포함한 백스테이지의 팀 전원에게 감사를 드립니다.
비록 여러분들 눈에 크게 보이지는 않지만, 완벽하게 진행을 해 주시고 계십니다.

모든 수상자께 축하를 보냅니다. 물론 제 친구인 쥐스탱 트뤼도 캐나다 총리에게도요. 쉽게 따라할 수 없는 과감한 행동이라 말해야 하겠지요. 대단합니다. 문재인 대통령에 대해서는 잠시 뒤에 기쁜 마음으로 소개해 드리도록 하겠습니다. 세계가 다시금 주목하게 된 피아니스트 랑랑도 빼놓을 수 없겠지요.

여기, 아틀란틱카운슬에서 수여하는 2017세계시민상 시상식에서 문재인 대통령을 소개하게 된 것을 특별한 영광으로 생각합니다. 특히, 제게는 그에게 상을 전달하게 된 것이 아주 시의적절하면서 큰 영광입니다.
왜냐 하면, 지난 주에 우리는 서울에서 만났기 때문입니다. 저는 그를 포함한 정부 내각과 주요 일원들과 함께 현재 한국이 대면한 수많은 어려움에 대해 이야기 나누는 귀중한 경험을 했습니다. 

50년 전 한국은 독립한 직후였습니다. 50년 전, 한국은 세계에서 가장 빈곤한 국가였습니다.
하지만 이들은 고작 50년 만에 세계 11번째의 경제 규모로 성장했습니다.
남녀를 불문하고 수많은 혁신가들과 사업가들에 의해 그들의 경제는 놀랍게 성장했습니다. 물론 남자들보다는 약간 적은 수의 여자들이 있었다는 것은 사실입니다만. 하지만 그들 모두는 믿을 수 없을 정도로 의욕적이며, 성실하고, 극도로 근면한 이들입니다.

하지만, 지난 주에 우리가 이야기하며 알게 된 바와 같이, 한국은 거대한 어려움에 직면해 있습니다. 인구의 변화라는 여러움이지요. 이 국가는 노령화 사회로 변화하고 있고, 내년에는 백만명의 노동가능인구를 잃게 될 예정입니다. 또한, 이들은 아마도 현재 가장 복잡한 지정학적 문제의 중심에 놓여 있습니다. 한국은 가장 곤란한 이웃들 사이에 살고 있으며, 사실 이런 표현은 대단히 절제된 표현이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다.

저는 지난 주에 비무장지대를 방문했습니다. 저는 가깝게 연결된 느낌과 믿을 수 없는 분리감을 동시에 느꼈습니다. 고작 4km의 폭이 248km로 이어져 있습니다. 사람들은 오랫동안 서로 말하거나 대화를 나눌 수 없었습니다.

바로 그것이 문재인 대통령이 그의 지혜와 총명함, 불굴의 정신과 가공할 만한 추진력으로 맞서야 하는 도전입니다. 또한 이런 도전에는 마르지 않는 깊은 샘물같은 용기가 필요할 것입니다.

문재인 대통령은 젊은 시절부터 그러한 용기를 보여 왔습니다. 그는 조국을 변화시키고자 하는 추진력과 용기를 보여 왔습니다. 이는 잃버버린 조국에도 마찬가지였습니다. 그는 이북 태생이며, 그의 부모는 지금은 북한이 된 곳을 떠나왔습니다.

그는 언제나 그의 조국이 더 나은 곳이 되길 원했습니다. 그는 여기에 크나큰 개인적 희생을 아끼지 않았습니다.
인권 변호사가 되기 이전, 그는 학생 시절에 인권과 민주적 권리를 위해 법을 공부하고, 활동가가 되었습니다.

그는 법을 배우면서도 활동가였고,
사법시험을 통과하면서도 활동가였습니다.
그는 정치적 활동가라는 이유로 투옥되었고, 감옥에서 자신이 사법시험에 합격한 것을 알았습니다.
그는 이제 평화 통일을 꿈꿉니다.
1987년, 마침내 대통령 직선제의 꿈이 이루어졌기 때문입니다.

그는 다시금 정치적 무대 중앙으로 돌아왔습니다.
그는 정치가가 아니었지만, 그 작은 인권변호사 사무실에서 함께 일하던 동료가 있었습니다.
그 동료는 이후 대통령이 된 고 노무현 대통령이었습니다.
저는 그 두 사람의 우정이 그로 하여금 다시금 한국의 정치무대 중앙에 서게 하고, 결단력과 불굴의 정신력, 그리고 더 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 용기를 갖게 하였다고 생각합니다.

문재인 대통령이 특별한 점은 그가 부패와 맞서려고 한다는 점입니다.
그는 대통령이라는 직책이 자신에게 잘 맞지 않는 옷을 입은 것 같다고 합니다.
하지만 저는 그가 꼭 맞는 옷을 입었다 생각합니다. 또한 한국에 만연한 부패에 맞서려는 그의 도전 역시 아름답게 어울리는 옷이라 생각합니다.

세계 어디든 부패에 맞서는 것은 쉬운 도전이 아닙니다. 하지만 알렉시스 토크빌이 말한 바 있듯이 사회적 신뢰의 회복이야말로 민주주의가 번성할 수 있는 가장 중요한 요건입니다.

한국과 같은 거대한 사회를 이끄는 데에는 추진력과 용기가 필요합니다. 특히 지금과 같은 시기에는 세계 시민으로서의 자각이 요구됩니다. 세계 시민으로서의 자각은 우리 모두를 하나로 묶을 수 있습니다. 이는 우리가 추구하는 이상이며, 우리가 존중하는 가치이고, 우리가 따라야 하는 원칙입니다. 저는 이러한 자각이 문재인 대통령을 움직이는 원동력이라 생각합니다.

문재인 대통령을 무대로 모시고 아틀란틱 카운슬이 수여하는 2017 세계시민상을 수여하도록 하겠습니다.
대통령님의 꿈이 꼭 이루어지기길 바랍니다.

As an alumni of the program, I have to say that it is great, great pleasure to come back.
And I would like to thank Fred, Adrian, and the whole team backstage. They do an amazing work.
You don't see it, but everything works perfection. Well done.

I would like to congratulate tonight to all the award winners, of course, my friend Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, who is a tough act to follow, I have to say. Well done.

President Whom, Moon, whom I will have a pleasure to introduce in a second.
And a world renowned pianist Lang Lang.

It is a particular honor for me to introduce president Moon tonight, and present him with the Atlantic Council 2017 Global citizens award.
And it is particularly timely for me and great honor that he, himself **** and present him this award.
Because we were together last week in Seoul, and I had a great privilege meeting with him, members of his team, members of his cabinet as well, to go through very, many challenges his country is facing.
Korea, was 50 years ago, right after the independence. The poorest country in the world, 50 years ago.
And a matter of 50 years, it has managed to become the 11th economy of the world.
(applause)

And it is a thriving economy. Full of innovators, entrepreneurs, men and women, a bit less for women than men I have to say, but all unbelievably motivated, dedicated, hard-working to the extreme. And at the same time, as we were discussing last week, and as we all recognized, Korea is a country that is facing massive challenges, demographic challenges. Its country is that ageing, that will be losing a hundred thousand working force, people starting next year. And it is right at the center of a probably the most difficult geo-political challenge of the days.
It lives in a fairly difficult neighborhood, and this is a very much an understatement.

When I visited the demilitarized zone last week. You have that feeling both proximity and connection and unbelievable deviate. 4m large, 248km long. And people have not been able to talk, or to have an dialogue for many years.
And which clearly president Moon is examining with all his wisdom, sagacity, resilience, and courage.
And to face such challenges, everyday over so many years, requires enomal.. enormous,  formidable strength, and it takes a deep reservoir of courage.

President Moon from his early years, has displayed such courage. He has shown the both having the strength and courage to push his country, the country he lost, he was born there but his parent came from North Korea today, well what is known today as North Korea.

And he always wanted his country to be a better place. He want it that off an a great personal expense.
Before becoming a lawyer, a human right lawyer. In his student days, he let the charge for the human rights and the civil rights, studies laws. He was an activist.

He studied the laws, he was an activist.
He pass the bar, he was an activist.
He went to jail, because he was an activist, and it was when he was in jail that he found out that he has passed the bar.
He now dreams a peaceful reunification.

So his dreams came true at home in South Korea, when in 1987, finally there were democratic elections.

He has now returned to the political stage, center stage.
He wasn't politics before, and he worked very closely with the one who had been his partner in that small human right law firm, soon to be president Roh, his friend, Now passed.

And I think it is that friendship with that former partner of his, which drove him to on to be the center stage of the politics in Korea. And to have the determination, resilience, and the courage to go forward, to march ahead.

And what is very special about him is that he wants to fight corruption.
He says that the job he is in, is like wearing clothes that do not really fit.
Well, I certainly think that those clothes fit in extremely well, and certainly the fight that he takes against the corruption in his country fits in beautifully.
It is not an easy challenge anywhere in the world to fight corruption.
And yet, it is a key to reinforcing the social trust that Alexis Tocqueville, one of the first xxxxxx (Atlantis defendee?) highlighted as so important for democracy to flourish.
To lead a great society such as Korea takes, as I said, strength and courage, and perhaps now more then ever, it takes a global citizen. A global citizen who can demonstrate the xxxxx that brings us all together tonight has nothing to do with the ocean that sometimes separates us. It has to do with ideals that we pursue, the value that we respect, and the principles by which we abide. It is clearly those that inspire president Moon.

I now invite president Moon to come to the stage to receive the Atlantic councils 2017 global citizen award and I hope your dreams come true, president.
